The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX)

The program, jointly funded by the German Bundestag, Germany's lower house of parliament, and the U.S. Congress, through the U.S. Department of State, provides a full scholarship to students who have demonstrated high achievement in academics as well as personal qualities such as curiosity, cultural awareness, flexibility, and communication.

American scholarship recipients depart for Germany during the summer and reside with a volunteer host family for a full year while attending a local high school. Prior to starting the school year, CBYX grant recipients attend a month-long orientation and language course, which also helps students adjust to life in Germany. Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to visit historical sites and learn more about German history, customs and traditions. CBYX students are also able to witness a session of the German Bundestag at the end of their program year.

German students arrive in the U.S. in August and, after attending a comprehensive arrival orientation, travel to their host family where they will spend the year studying in the local high school and learning about the traditions of their hosts. German students often provide presentations about life in Germany to their communities and have the opportunity to experience the diverse cultures that make up America through daily interaction. At the end of the program year, students travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with important political figures and discuss what they have learned about the American way of life.
