The Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX)

The program's goal is to provide an opportunity for high school students from Eurasia (the 12 New Independent States of the former Soviet Union) to experience life in a democratic society in order to promote democratic values and institutions upon their return to Eurasia. Students live with host families, attend school and participate in enrichment activities to learn about American society, values and also to help educate Americans about their countries and cultures. The program places special emphasis on leadership skills and seeks ways for participants to devlop these skills during the school year. On their return home, students will apply their leadership skills and become involved in a well-established FLEX alumni network.

"I feel very lucky to be surrounded by so many good people that offer their help when I experience difficulties. Through my studies in high school my English has improved and my knowledge of American history, culture, and traditions as well. I made new friends and improved my socializing skills. Through community service I had the opportunity to play at least a small role in building a new generation based on moral values as I completed 25 hours of community service working with kids between the ages of two and eleven."

—Valentina, FLEX student from the Republic of Moldova
